Well you see, there’s a sort of panic that sinks in when you become laid off. I was laid off from my job with a 9-month-old while 4 months pregnant. We had just purchased a new house and sold our little two bedroom house. Twice the size, twice the mortgage. Now we had half the income. How was this going to work?
After being laid off for a while, I came to terms with the fact I was never going to find a new office job while pregnant. Regardless of discrimination laws, who wants to hire someone who will be on LOA after working 3 or 4 months. I loved my old job as an IT Application Specialist for our local school district. However, I was also working on my Masters in Special Education PreK-4. I thought maybe I could find a job as a classroom aid or another education job while I finished my degree.
I started looking online for various job I was qualified for when I fell upon the Forbes Top 100 Work From Home Jobs list. At the time VIPKID was number 3 on the list. Currently, VIPKID is number 1 on this list!! I started exploring the options on the list. I saw I qualified for the ESL Teacher position listed with VIPKID. Below are the qualifications:
- Teaching experience of any kind including tutoring, coaching or mentoring (1 year)
- A Bachelor’s degree or higher
- Eligibility to work in the U.S. or Canada
- A computer and a headset
- A high-speed Internet connection
I decided to apply, because, why not? What did I have to lose at this point? So I applied.
Terrified of the outcome. The interview process seemed brutal. What if I embarrassed myself. What if I wasn’t a good online teacher. Then what? Still no job. Ugh.
I was so anxious to finally find another job. I studied every video on YouTube. I spent hours at my computer practicing and rehearsing for my interview. I sat around pacing back and forth after my interview for two days waiting for my results email. Thankfully I PASSED! WOOHOO!
I immediately set up my classroom, sent in my biography, made an introduction video and opened my availability. I was so excited to get started. I couldn’t wait to start making money for my family again! But would it really be that easy?
I made a great video and bio. I had professional pictures on my profile. But I was still skeptical. It sounded too good to be true.
I woke up the next morning to find out I had one student book me for a class! My very first student, Kitty. She was the cutest little 4-year-old. I prepped for the class, studied the slides, and tried my best. I was worried I wasn’t going to be good enough. I must have done something right, it has been over a year since my first class and Kitty is still booking my classes!
The next morning I woke up to find out I had booked 46 classes within the next week! CRAZY! I could not believe it. The amount of money I was going to make from those classes was more than my unemployment compensation was covering. I was so excited!
Over the next month, I booked many many classes. In fact, my first full month’s check was just shy of $3000. That was amazing! I had made more in this one month than I made in one month at my office job! To top it off, I made my own schedule. I worked when I wanted to work. My schedule was 100% flexible.
Let us fast forward a year. I have been with the company for 370 days as of today! I have never looked back. I don’t know that I ever will! I went from a high stress low paying job to a high paying flexible work from home job. I now stay home with my two beautiful girls (and another baby due in June). We have the time to go to music class, gymnastics, swim lessons, story time, and so much more. This job has been the biggest blessing.
I wanted to share my experiences with all of you. This job has changed my life! I know it can change yours too! I am going to leave all of the information about the company below. I will also link my YouTube playlist with all of the information on how to apply and pass through the interview process. I know this job will be amazing for you too! Please let me know if you have any questions! I am always here to help!
